The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a €20 million grant agreement with Germany to advance its energy transition agenda, focusing on renewable energy development, vocational training, and expanding energy access in underserved communities.
The deal was formalized in Abuja by Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, alongside Dr. Karin Jansen of the German Embassy and Gerald Keuhnemund of KfW Development Bank.
Facilitated through KfW and the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF), the grant aims to drive the adoption of renewable technologies, create jobs, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
“The project is structured around promoting renewable energy efficiency, scaling vocational training, and expanding energy infrastructure to underserved areas,” Senator Bagudu stated. He emphasized that the initiative will empower youths, women, and communities by generating economic opportunities and clean energy access.
Bagudu also urged collaboration among stakeholders to ensure coordinated implementation and avoid duplicating efforts, especially in sectors like health and education.
Dr. Jansen hailed the agreement as a milestone in German-Nigerian cooperation, noting it aligns with Germany’s 50th anniversary of the Energy Transition Challenge Fund. “This initiative strengthens Germany’s financial cooperation with Nigeria to support the country’s ambitious energy transition,” she said, highlighting the fund’s competitive model to back impactful projects.
Keuhnemund reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s climate goals through sustainable, high-impact solutions that engage the private sector and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving energy access and local capacity.
