Real Madrid’s star striker Kylian Mbappe is doubtful for their FIFA Club World Cup opening match against Al Hilal on Wednesday, June 18, after missing training due to a fever, club sources confirmed.
The 26-year-old French forward, who joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, woke up ill on Tuesday, casting uncertainty over his participation in the Group H clash at Hard Rock Stadium. New manager Xabi Alonso, making his debut, said a final decision on Mbappe’s involvement will be made on match day. Defender Antonio Rudiger and midfielder Eduardo Camavinga are also likely sidelined.
Mbappe’s potential absence is a blow for Real Madrid, favored to win the expanded 32-team tournament. He scored 31 La Liga goals this season, leading the league. With young striker Endrick already ruled out due to injury, Alonso may rely on Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham to spearhead the attack against the Saudi Pro League side.
Alonso emphasized team unity despite the setbacks, noting Al Hilal’s challenge under new coach Simone Inzaghi. The match, kicking off at 3:00 p.m. local time, marks Real Madrid’s first test in a tournament spanning June 14 to July 13 across 12 U.S. stadiums.
