South East lawmakers, through Idu Igariwey, leader of representatives expressed concerns as five South-East states were affected in the technical glitches that resulted in allegedly massive failure of candidates.
The lawmaker stated that apologies and public relations campaigns were not sufficient to make up for the emotional distress the candidates and families went through. Even after the body confirmed that they experienced some glitches and technical issues, he also complained about the lack of preparation time for candidates in the south east as he said, “Reports indicate that the notice was far too short for most of the students, resulting in low turn out; and in some cases, the rescheduled date clashed with on-going WAEC examination papers.” He also emphasized on the overwhelming expectations most of the candidates who were school students still undergoing WAEC exams May feel overwhelmed, “JAMB’s knee-jerk and fire brigade approach has been anything but sufficient or desirable. Traumatised students in the Southeastern states, many of who are still taking their WAEC examinations, have been invited in less than 48 hours notice, to present themselves to retake the rescheduled UTME examination.”
He also stated that the exams should be cancelled as some tutors of some students urged, “We call for a total cancellation of the 2025 UTME examinations, and a new date fixed for the same across the country. Indeed, only yesterday, the Association of Tutorial School Operators advised that, ‘The UTME should be moved to July/August, after the completion of WAEC and NECO examinations, to ensure that no prospective candidate is disadvantaged.’” This came after Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, called for JAMB’S audit on Sunday, even though the matriculation body rescheduled the examinations for those candidates in the affected centers.
The leader of the south east representatives who demanded for the registrars resignation spoke well on his character but urging got there to be consequences for the actions that took place as he said, “To this end, we call for the immediate suspension of those at the commanding heights of JAMB’s digital operations and examination logistics. The Registrar of JAMB is said to be a good man, but then, leadership must carry consequences.” He claimed that his resignation will be an action of a civilized democracy and should be the decision made, “That is the way to go in any civilised democracy, and we expect no less.”
