The Kaduna State University (KASU) has been thrown into confusion over conflicting reports regarding the suspension of strike by the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Addressing a press conference at the university’s main campus on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, announced that ASUU-KASU had called off its strike and that academic activities would resume immediately.
According to him, the decision followed significant interventions by Governor Uba Sani, including the approval of a ₦50 million monthly standing order for staff welfare and the release of ₦146 million to clear some withheld salaries and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) allowances.
“The Governor has also approved the retention of a percentage of the University’s internally generated revenue (IGR) after verifying the actual amounts collected. This will enhance the University’s financial autonomy,” Professor Musa stated.
He described the measures as “bold and unprecedented in the recent history of the University,” and commended the governor for his “extraordinary sensitivity to the plight of students, the condition of education, and the welfare of academic and non-academic staff.”
The Vice Chancellor also revealed that a high-level negotiating committee, chaired by Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, had been constituted to engage with all university unions to resolve lingering issues.
“Governor Uba Sani has demonstrated deep sensitivity to long-standing challenges faced by university staff—many of which date back over a decade and were inherited from previous administrations,” he added.
However, ASUU-KASU refuted the claim that the strike had been suspended, describing the announcement by the university management as misleading and unauthorized.
In a statement signed by the acting ASUU Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi and Secretary, Comrade Peter M. Waziri, the union stated: “The general public is hereby notified that the purported suspension of the indefinite strike action in KASU, as announced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Abdullahi I. Musa, violates the principles of ASUU. The Management did not initiate the strike and therefore lacks the authority to suspend it.”
The union emphasized that it was awaiting the decision of its National Executive Council (NEC) following resolutions passed at a congress held earlier on May 15, 2025.
“The general public is advised to disregard the purported suspension of the strike action by the university management,” the statement concluded.
