JAMB and university vice-chancellors will meet Thursday to address widespread failure in the 2025 UTME, seeking solutions to improve results.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and vice-chancellors of Nigerian universities are set to meet on Thursday, May 15, 2025, to review the mass failure recorded in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The announcement was made by JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, in Abuja on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Preliminary results show over 60% of the 1.8 million candidates scored below 200 out of 400, raising concerns about declining academic performance. The meeting will analyze factors like exam preparation, syllabus coverage, and test integrity to identify causes of the poor outcome.
Stakeholders, including parents and educators, have expressed alarm, with some blaming inadequate teaching and others questioning JAMB’s assessment methods. The board urged calm, promising transparency in the review process to address public concerns.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape future UTME policies and interventions to boost candidates’ performance and ensure fairness in admissions.
