The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) announced a May 30, 2025, lockdown across the Southeast to commemorate Biafra heroes killed during the 1967-1970 civil war.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a total lockdown across the Southeast on May 30, 2025, to honour Biafra heroes and heroines who died in the 1967-1970 Nigeria-Biafra war. The announcement was made by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, in a statement on Monday.
The lockdown, from 6 am to 6 pm, will suspend all economic, social, and political activities, except for essential services like hospitals and emergency workers. IPOB urged residents to stay indoors to avoid potential clashes with security forces. The group also notified the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to reschedule exams and informed Southeast and South-South governors of the memorial.
IPOB emphasized that the annual Biafra Heroes Memorial Day includes memorial lectures and tributes to honour the sacrifices made for Biafra’s independence struggle.
