The Nineteen northern governors of Saturday call for a review of Nigeria’s security strategies to address escalating violence, citing over 250 deaths in two weeks across Plateau, Benue, Borno, and Katsina.
Governors from Nigeria’s northern states convened in Kaduna on May 10, 2025, urging the federal government to overhaul its security strategies in response to escalating violence in the region, the Northern Governors’ Forum announced.
The meeting, chaired by Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, was held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House and attended by governors from Plateau, Benue, Borno, Katsina, and other northern states. The governors expressed concern over recent attacks that claimed 250 lives in two weeks across Plateau, Benue, Borno.
The forum highlighted the emergence of a new terror group, Mahmuda, alongside existing threats from Boko Haram, ISWAP, Lakurawa, and other militias, which have intensified security challenges. The governors called for a comprehensive review of military and security tactics to curb the rising killings and restore stability.
The meeting followed a joint session in October 2023 with the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, where similar concerns were raised. The governors reiterated their commitment to collaborating with federal authorities and security agencies to address the crisis.
