On April 29, 2025, the Ondo State Police Command kicked off a game-changing training for 160 officers in Akure, focusing on intelligence gathering to sharpen their crime-fighting skills. The program, flagged off by Commissioner of Police Abayomi Oladipo at the state headquarters, aims to equip officers with the know-how to sniff out criminal activities before they escalate. Oladipo emphasized that better intelligence means safer communities, especially in a state plagued by kidnappings and unrest, like the recent burning of a police station in Ifon over a custodial death. The training, designed to boost productivity, teaches officers how to collect and analyze information to tackle crime head-on. This comes amid growing security challenges in Ondo, including the arrest of a suspected Boko Haram member in 2017 and protests over alleged police brutality in February 2025. Oladipo urged the officers to take the training seriously, warning that any misconduct would face strict consequences, reflecting a push for professionalism in a force often criticized for overreach.

What This Means for Nigerians

For folks in Ondo, this training could mean a smarter police force that stops crime before it starts—think fewer kidnappings or robberies. But it also puts pressure on officers to act right, as past incidents like the Ifon unrest show how quickly trust can break. If the police use these skills well, it’s a win for safety; if not, it might just be another promise that doesn’t deliver.
