The stage is set for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, and Nigeria’s D’Tigress is ready to defend their title. The tournament, scheduled from July 25 to August 3, will be hosted in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

D’Tigress has dominated African women’s basketball, winning four consecutive titles from 2017 to 2023. Their group matchup against Mozambique is particularly notable, as the teams previously clashed in the 2023 AfroBasket quarterfinals, with Nigeria narrowly winning by 7points (59-52).

Group D Matchups:

. Nigeria (D’Tigress): Defending champions, seeking a record-extending fifth consecutive title
. Mozambique: Silver medalists in 1986, 2003, and 2013; coached by Carlos Aik
.Rwanda: Finished fourth in the last edition, coached by Cheikh Sarr

The top teams from each group will automatically qualify for the quarterfinals, while the second and third-placed teams will compete in a qualifying series. The top four teams will secure a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.

Led by coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress aims to bounce back from their loss at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals. With their sights set on a fifth consecutive title, the team will need to bring their A-game to overcome stiff competition from Mozambique and Rwanda.

The 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship promises to be an exciting tournament, with top African teams vying for continental supremacy. Will D’Tigress successfully defend their title, or will another team rise to the challenge?
