As Nigeria’s political landscape begins to stir ahead of the 2027 general elections, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has firmly declared his allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, dismissing any notions of contesting against him.
Wike, a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), played a pivotal role in the formation of the G5 group, which supported Tinubu’s candidacy in the 2023 elections. His support was rooted in a quest for equity and justice, advocating for a power shift to the South. In recognition of his support, President Tinubu appointed Wike as the FCT Minister. Wike has consistently expressed gratitude for this appointment, stating, “Tinubu made me the FCT minister and I won’t allow anybody to crumble our political structure. No!”
However, not all political observers are convinced of Wike’s unwavering loyalty. Dan Nwanyanwu, chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), has suggested that Wike may harbor presidential ambitions for 2027, asserting that he will vie for the presidency on the PDP platform. Nwanyanwu stated, “If he is not going to run, let us wait… Of course he is going to run under the PDP.”
Similarly, Chief James Onwordi, the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, opined that Wike could oppose Tinubu if the PDP consolidates its structure. He emphasized the importance of unity within the party to challenge the incumbent effectively.
Wike’s political maneuvers have not been without controversy. His ongoing feud with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has caused divisions within the state assembly and the PDP. Wike has criticized Fubara for allegedly attempting to dismantle the political structure that supported his rise, stating, “In three months, it is sad for someone to scatter a political structure that supported and brought you up.”
As the 2027 elections approach, Wike’s actions and alliances will be closely scrutinized. Whether his declarations of loyalty to President Tinubu are rooted in genuine allegiance or strategic positioning remains a topic of debate among political analysts and observers.
