Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan’s latest psychological thriller, Recall, premiered in cinemas nationwide on April 4, 2025. The film, which debuted at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in November 2024, delves into the complexities of love, memory, and African spirituality.
Recall follows the story of Anita, portrayed by Sharon Ooja, who suffers from sudden memory loss, disrupting her seemingly perfect marriage to Goke, played by Olarotimi Fakunle. As Anita’s condition worsens, her mother seeks help from a prophetess in Badagry, introducing elements of African spirituality into the narrative.
The film features a star-studded cast, including Patience Ozokwor, Shan George, Bimbo Akintola, and Jimmy Jean-Louis. Afolayan, known for his works like The Figurine and Aníkúlápó, continues his exploration of African themes and storytelling in Recall.
Critics have noted that while Recall is visually compelling, it may lack the emotional depth found in some of Afolayan’s previous works. Nonetheless, the film’s focus on African spirituality and its impact on personal relationships offers a unique perspective in Nollywood cinema.
Recall is currently showing in cinemas across Nigeria, inviting audiences to experience a narrative that intertwines personal struggle with cultural and spiritual elements.
