In a landmark operation, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismantled a sophisticated network orchestrating crypto-romance scams, leading to the arrest of 792 individuals, including foreign nationals.
A Coordinated International Effort:
On December 10, 2024, the EFCC raided the Big Leaf Building in Lagos, uncovering a call center that deceived victims across the Americas and Europe. The suspects, comprising 148 Chinese and 40 Filipino nationals, were allegedly recruited to train local operatives in fraudulent schemes. EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren noted that Nigerian accomplices initiated contact with victims through phishing, primarily targeting individuals in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and several European nations. Once trust was established, foreign operatives took over, convincing victims to invest in non-existent cryptocurrency ventures.
Seizure of Assets and Ongoing Investigations:
The operation yielded computers, phones, and vehicles. The EFCC is collaborating with international partners to probe potential links to organized crime. The suspects, currently detained under a valid remand warrant, are expected to face charges in court soon.
Impact and Global Concern:
These scams have caused significant financial losses worldwide, with British victims alone losing approximately £100 million annually. The EFCC’s action underscores a commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting citizens from fraudulent activities. The EFCC’s decisive action highlights the global nature of cybercrime and the necessity for international cooperation in combating such frauds. As investigations continue, authorities aim to disrupt these criminal networks and prevent future scams targeting vulnerable individuals worldwide.
