From Politics to Private Ventures

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is once again the talk of Nigeria’s political sphere. After a brief hiatus from the limelight, El-Rufai’s recent maneuvers suggest he’s gearing up for a significant political comeback. In December 2023, El-Rufai announced his departure from active politics, stepping into the private sector as the chairman of Afri-Venture Capital Company Ltd. The firm, based in Abuja, boasts a hefty $100 million investment aimed at nurturing Nigerian and African innovators. El-Rufai emphasized the need to mentor young entrepreneurs, stating, “We don’t want to take your business; we want to develop it. But if we take the risk on you, we will take a percentage of the business.”

Stirring the Political Pot

Fast forward to March 2024, and El-Rufai’s private sector retreat seemed short-lived. He was spotted in discussions with leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), sparking rumors of a potential defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. The plot thickened on October 1, 2024, when El-Rufai declared his intention to re-enter politics in the next general election, asserting, “there is no retirement in politics.”

Whispers in the Corridors of Power

El-Rufai’s recent engagements have not gone unnoticed. His interactions with prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have fueled speculation about his political trajectory. Dare Glintstone Akinniyi, spokesperson for the PDP National Youth Group, remarked, “El-Rufai’s link up with major opposition leaders is a new feather to the battle ahead, and I think Atiku Abubakar is closer to being President than President Tinubu being re-elected.”

The Unseen Angle: A Strategic Play?

While many view El-Rufai’s moves as positioning for a presidential bid, an alternative perspective suggests a more calculated strategy. By aligning with opposition figures and potentially shifting party allegiance, El-Rufai could be orchestrating a broader coalition to challenge the current administration. This approach might not only bolster his political capital but also reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. As the nation watches closely, El-Rufai’s actions underscore the fluidity and unpredictability of Nigerian politics, where today’s alliances can become tomorrow’s rivalries.
