A Federal High Court in Damaturu, Yobe State, has sentenced a 20-year-old man, Dauda Umaru, to seven years imprisonment for procuring and having sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old minor.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) successfully secured the conviction after a thorough investigation and prosecution.

Delivering the judgement, the presiding judge, Justice Aisha Salihu, found the defendant guilty of violating Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

The court immediately ordered the convict to pay N1 million into the Victim Trust Fund Account and an additional N500,000 as compensation to the victim.

“He was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and ordered to pay N1,000,000 into the Victim Trust Fund Account and N500,000 as compensation to the victim. Failure to pay the fine will attract an additional seven months’ imprisonment”.

The ruling came after a similar victory by the agency, which recently secured the conviction of a 37-year-old woman, Fatima Sanda. A High Court judge, Justice Aisha Ndume, sentenced Sanda to two years imprisonment for procuring a 16-year-old girl for sexual exploitation, while also ordering her to pay N500,000 in compensation to the victim.
