The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has disclosed that approximately 30 State Houses of Assembly have officially endorsed the proposed constitutional amendment aimed at establishing state police across the federation. He assured that the decentralized policing system will complement existing national security structures and strengthen grassroots law enforcement.

Akpabio made the disclosure on Wednesday while addressing members of the Arewa Revival Project, a northern youth organization representing the 19 northern states, during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja. He stated that the reforms will drastically improve the capacity of the country to tackle prevailing security threats.

“As I speak with you now, for the first time in the history of Nigeria, it may not take us a month before we have a state police system, a decentralized policing in the country, because about 30 states have endorsed the amendment to the Nigerian constitution to bring about a state police system, which will further increase the security of the nation,” the Senate President stated.

Akpabio urged the youth delegation to increase grassroots mobilization for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. He emphasized that continuity in government remains essential to allow the ongoing economic reforms and security interventions of the administration to fully materialize.

The Senate President also challenged Nigerian youths to rise above social media propaganda against the current administration, stressing that the President has taken steps to diversify the economy and overhaul anachronistic tax laws.

“I expect the Nigerian youth to rise above social media propaganda because this President has managed to take us out of a mono-economy, an economy that was dependent only on crude oil. He has brought innovations to bear through the tax reform system, through tinkering with anachronistic laws…It is not going to be easy for you because most of those who are attacking the president and attacking these young men on social media are being paid. You are not being paid”, Akpabio.

He advised the delegation to organise periodic grassroots engagements to properly educate citizens on the policies of the administration and to counter deliberate online misinformation.

Akpabio also claimed the President’s performance has earned huge support from the National Assembly, stating that federal lawmakers have already endorsed Tinubu for a second term in office.

“No president has achieved the level of development that he has done in this country today since independence. The naysayers will not want to say so, but I am very proud, and members of the National Assembly are very proud,” Akpabio declared.
