‎The Federal Government is partnering with the newly launched Built for Her Foundation to empower women in the health sector.

‎Representing the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Dr. Mayowa Alade announced that the scheme is a key component of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII).

‎The program seeks to reduce maternal and child mortality by ensuring more women are in decision-making roles within the healthcare system.

‎The foundation awarded scholarships to 30 female medical students selected from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The 30 beneficiaries were chosen based on academic merit in partnership with the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA), with five students representing each of the six geopolitical zones.

‎The foundation, established by Dr. Teniola Saraki, aims to address the gender imbalance in the health sector. While women in Nigeria spend 25% more of their lives in poor health than men, they make up less than 40% of the physician workforce. The foundation intends to improve retention rates by providing full tuition scholarships to 400-level female students.

‎The Federal Ministry of Health plans to integrate the “Built for Her” model into its national primary healthcare revitalization strategy. The foundation has announced that the scholarship will become an annual program, expanding into medical research focused on diseases that disproportionately affect Nigerian women  in the coming years.
