Nigeria’s journey to the semi-finals was secured by a second-half header from Victor Osimhen, who recorded a goal and an assist to down the Desert Foxes of Algeria.
Victor Osimhen silenced critics and brushed aside reports of internal squad friction to inspire Nigeria to a 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-final of AFCON 2025 on Saturday.
Despite a dominant first half with the Super Eagles controlling possession, the deadlock remained until the 47th minute when Osimhen rose to meet a Bruno Onyemaechi cross with a header.
The 2023 African Player of the Year proved his focus remained on the pitch. In the 57th minute, a pass from Alex Iwobi found Osimhen, who unselfishly squared the ball for Akor Adams to sweep the keeper and secure the victory. Algeria, uncharacteristically toothless, failed to register a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.
Victor Osimhen was named Man of the Match, contributing to both goals and reaching 35 international strikes.
For me, I just did my job. I tried to fight for the team and get goals or assists, but the whole squad deserves praise. Morocco is a great side… I just hope it is a great game between two great teams – Victor Osimhen
The win at the Grand Stade de Marrakech propelled the Super Eagles into their 16th continental semi-final, where they are scheduled to face the host nation, Morocco. Nigeria will travel to Rabat to face Morocco on Wednesday, January 14.
