Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed viral social media news claiming he alleged the United States government was attempting to assassinate him in Nigeria.
In a statement released via his verified Facebook page, Gumi dismissed the viral reports as fake news, stressing that the confusion came from a lecture he delivered concerning a 2012 Boko Haram plot.
He stated that his lecture referred to August 2012, when two Boko Haram attackers were killed after a bomb they intended for him detonated prematurely near his residence.
I never said so, and I also never thought of such a possibility… I advise all news agencies that reported the fake news to publicly retract it and tender their apologies – Sheikh Ahmad Gumi
He stated that he currently resides in his home without any fear or intimidation and demanded a formal apology from media outlets that carried the unverified story.
