The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a disclaimer regarding reports claiming the release of the 2027 General Election schedule.

Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, described the circulating documents as false and misleading.

This is seen as an attempt by the commission to maintain the integrity of the commission under its new leadership, headed by Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), who assumed office in 2025.

The commission emphasized that it cannot legally release a timetable outside the statutory window. The commission is focused on local polls rather than the 2027 national contest.

Under Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, INEC is required to publish the official Notice of Election no later than 360 days before the poll. Any timetable released years in advance is legally invalid.

INEC warned that official communications are only disseminated through its verified website and social media handles, urging the international community and local voters to ignore guerilla press releases.
