Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, has accused the Federal Government of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to intimidate opposition leaders.

‎The statement was made by the Governor, after the arraignment of his Finance Commissioner, Yakubu Adamu, on charges of money laundering and terrorism financing of approximately $9.7 million.

‎The EFCC alleges that between January and May 2024, Bauchi officials conspired to release $2.3 million in cash to Bello Bodejo, the president of Miyetti Allah, allegedly signed by Governor Mohammed. The agency claims these funds were intended for terrorist activities.

‎Finance Commissioner of Bauchi state, Yakubu Adamu and three other senior officials were remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre on Wednesday and so far pleaded not guilty to the allegations raised against them.

‎Governor Mohammed also claimed he was offered political safety if he joined the APC, a move he described as an attempt to create a one-party state.

‎The Governor emphasized on the mentioning of his name in criminal court filings despite possessing constitutional immunity from prosecution while in office.

I am not a coward. I will not join them. I refuse to join their party… If they want war, we will give them war. If they want peace, we will give them peace – Governor Bala Mohammed

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled a bail ruling for January 5, 2026. The Bauchi State government warns that salary payments for 600,000 workers could be disrupted if bail is denied, as the Commissioner is a primary signatory to state accounts.
