Grenade explosion injures soldier, children in Nasarawa

A festive cleanup turned into a nightmare on Wednesday, December 24, when a hand grenade detonated in a residential compound along Abacha Road, Maraba, Nasarawa State. The explosion severely injured a female soldier, identified as Mohammed, and two young children.

‎The incident occurred at exactly 11:46 AM after a resident discovered the device while cleaning her apartment and sought the help of the soldier to identify it.

‎Preliminary investigations reveal that the grenade had been lying dormant in the apartment for three years. It was reportedly left there by the resident’s brother, a soldier currently serving in the counter-insurgency operations in the North East.

‎Unaware of the danger, the woman presented the device to her neighbor, Mohammed who was a soldier, to ask if it was a useful item or junk. The grenade detonated almost immediately upon being handled.

‎The explosion caused severe damage to the female soldier’s left wrist and body. Two children belonging to the woman who found the device also sustained severe injuries from the fragments of the blast.

‎The victims were moved from a private hospital in Keffi to the DHQ Medical Centre in Abuja, and finally to Cedarcrest Hospital, Apo, known for specialized trauma care.

Dawn Herald gathered that ‎ as at today, being the 26th day of December, the female soldier is in stable condition and responding to treatment, though the impact of her injuries may remain for a very long time.
