An assistant parish priest was shot, at Ogbaku in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State at 8:00am on Christmas Day as he was approaching the church gate to conduct the morning Christmas Mass.

The priest was hit in the right hand and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Eyewitnesses stated that no gunman was visible at the scene, leading to the belief that the shot was fired from a distance by a sniper or was a stray bullet from a nearby clash.

‎The Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, confirmed the attack and called for prayers for the quick recovery of priests.

‎The Imo State Police Command has deployed officers to the scene to verify claims and begin a formal investigation. The DPO of Owerri West has already visited the church and requested to interview the priest to aid in tracking the assailants.
