An Upper Sharia Court in Kano State has sentenced a youth, Ahmad Salisu Sheka, to sweep the Murtala Mohammed Friday Mosque and to attend all five daily obligatory congregational prayers as punishment for theft.

The presiding judge, Dr Bello Musa Khalid, sitting at the Hausawa Filin Hockey court, handed down the sentence after the defendant pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and the theft of public streetlights. The court firmly established his guilt based on his confession during the proceedings.

The court, in addition to the mandatory sweeping and prayer attendance, ordered Sheka to pay adequate compensation for the stolen items. He was subsequently handed over to a correctional facility official, Habib H. Habib, to ensure the strict execution and monitoring of the sentence.

The convict’s accomplice reportedly escaped during their initial apprehension in the Sallare neighbourhood.
