Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing the Kaduna South Senatorial District, on Wednesday commenced the distribution of thousands of bags of rice to families across the eight local government areas of Southern Kaduna, to provide succor to vulnerable households facing high food costs during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The distribution is welcomed by many particularly beneficiaries as a unified gesture, that targets residents across all political, religious, and social divides.

‎Southern Kaduna, often referred to as Zone 3, relies heavily on agriculture for survival and to many, it is their major source and income. While the 2025 harvest season has seen a slight dip in the national price of staples like rice, falling from nearly ₦100,000 to approximately ₦55,000-₦65,000 per 50kg bag in some regions, livestock and imported goods remain expensive.

‎Senator Katung, a former Commissioner of Finance and a lawyer by profession, has prioritized welfare programs since his election to the 10th Senate. His media aide, Midat Joseph, emphasized that this outreach is a continuation of the people-centered representation of the senator.

‎The distribution covers all 8 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the district, including Jema’a, Zangon Kataf, Kachia, and Kaura. The beneficiaries include market women, religious organizations, community-based forums, and even supporters from rival political parties.

‎Senator Katung urged constituents to embrace peace, love, and unity, during the Yuletide season and beyond.
