Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State is set to formally announce his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in January 2026, according to the state’s APC leadership.

The APC leadership confirmed that the defection ceremony, which was originally planned for November, had been pushed back twice, first due to a national security crisis and to accommodate the festive calendar and to avoid conflicting with the jam-packed Christmas and New Year activities

Taraba State APC Chairman, Ibrahim Tukur, confirmed that while Governor Kefas has already completed the necessary process at the ward level, the official ceremony has been delayed to the new year.

The governor wrote to his ward executives, and they have duly received him. As far as party records are concerned, Governor Kefas is now a bona fide member of the APC – Tukur

The chairman revealed that the entire State Executive Council and 15 members of the Taraba State House of Assembly have also joined the ruling party.

‎The governor initially postponed his defection from November, due to the mass kidnapping of students in Kebbi State. He deemed it insensitive to proceed with political celebrations while the state is facing insecurity.

‎The formal reception for Governor Kefas, who was elected on the platform of the PDP in 2023, will be held on a specific date to be announced in January 2026.
