T‎he Sokoto State Government has dismissed reports that Governor Ahmed Aliyu accompanied his Abia State counterpart, Alex Otti, to visit Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.

In a statement issued on Friday, the governor’s spokesman, Abubakar Bawa, clarified that Governor Aliyu was not in the country at the time of the visit. The government emphasized that the governor was performing religious duties in Saudi Arabia, debunking claims that he was personally involved in the meeting with the IPOB leader.

‎For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Ahmed Aliyu was in the Holy Land performing Lesser Hajj as of 30th November 2025, at the time Dr. Otti privately visited Sokoto State

While Governor Aliyu was absent, the state government confirmed that Governor Otti was received at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport by selected commissioners and Special Advisers. These officials accorded him the customary courtesies as a visiting governor, which may have led to the misconception of the host governor’s presence.

‎The statement aimed to correct the narrative surrounding Governor Otti’s visit to Sokoto on November 30, 2025, distancing him from any perceived political endorsement of the separatist leader’s cause.
