President Bola Tinubu has forwarded a list of 65 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, including 34 career and 31 non-career appointees.
The list features several prominent political and military figures, such as former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd.), former Minister of Interior and Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd.), and former Imo State First Lady Barr. Mrs. Chioma Ohakim. The nominations were made pursuant to the powers granted by the Nigerian Constitution.
The inclusion of the non-career list, featuring prominent political figures and retired military personnel by the presidency, is aimed towards shaping the focus and priorities of foreign engagements of the country over the next few years.
The list was transmitted to the Senate on Thursday, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio giving the Committee on Foreign Affairs a one-week deadline to vet the nominees and report back.
