The leadership of the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) has publicly denounced the rape of a female student that occurred on campus, stating that the convicted perpetrator was an intruder and not an employee, despite finding by a court.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, issued a statement following the February 2025 conviction of Mr. Kolawole Muyiwa, arguing that the court made a factual error by labeling him a staff member. The university is fighting to correct the record and uphold its zero-tolerance policy on sexual violence.

‎The rape, which took place in 2021 against a student who was a minor at the time, has raised serious questions about campus security.

‎The university confirmed that the culprit, Muyiwa, gained access to the office where the crime occurred because a serving lecturer, Mr. Sunday Fawowe, permitted his friend to use the space, creating the environment for the horrific crime.

‎The LASUED administration maintained that Muyiwole was a civilian intruder, distancing the institution from any formal employment link to the convicted rapist.
