Passengers on the Abuja-Kaduna train service were left stranded after their train developed a technical glitch just minutes into the trip from Kaduna. The train, which departed Kaduna around 2:00 PM, encountered problems about an hour into the journey and was forced to turn back to the Kaduna terminal for repairs.

The breakdown was unexpected, occurring shortly after the train commenced its journey. The train departed the Kaduna terminal around 2:00 PM and broke down approximately one hour into the scheduled journey.
A passenger reported that the incident was abrupt, noting that the train suddenly began to move backwards without any immediate explanation from the crew.

An official of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in Kaduna confirmed the development, attributing the failure to a technical glitch and that the train returned to the terminal for necessary repairs.

Several Abuja-bound passengers were left stranded at the Kaduna terminal, waiting for a resolution. Some commuters opted to return home instead of waiting for the technical issues to be resolved.

‎The NRC official did not provide a definitive timeline for the resumption of the service, stating that the situation is awaiting resolution.

‎ Just months prior, the service was suspended following a derailment that resulted in injuries to passengers. The NRC later attributed that incident primarily to human error, excessive speeding, and misapplication of the emergency braking system.

Following the derailment, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) also noted issues like unserviceable switch mechanisms and inadequate staff training.

The latest breakdown adds to the series of reliability challenges that the Nigerian Railway Corporation has been working to address to restore public confidence.
