Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has officially filed a defamation lawsuit against activist Deji Adeyanju in Anambra State for alleged derogatory remarks made on social media. The lawsuit was disclosed by Adeyanju on October 15, 2025.
The legal action comes from a series of posts by Deji Adeyanju, who accused Obi of corruption and misconduct during the 2023 election period. Notably, a post from August 21 alleged that Obi embezzled funds from Anambra State to support his family business, including claims that Obi attempted to bribe Adeyanju during a meeting.
Obi’s legal team, EJESIMEN & CO MADIBA CHAMBERS, SAN, demanded a public retraction and an unreserved apology, calling the remarks defamatory. Deji Adeyanju responded to the lawsuit on his Facebook page, expressing relief that Obi proceeded with the suit and vowing to defend himself vigorously in court.
I will prove in court that Peter Obi is corrupt, a bigot, and a fraud. You will all be entertained, I promise – Adeyanju
Adeyanju, a known critic of Obi, has frequently clashed with Obi’s supporters, known as Obidients, and has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing on social media and broadcast platforms.
The lawsuit arrives after earlier threats by Obi to take legal action over damaging posts. Their rivalry has intensified over the past months, with Adeyanju calling Obi a “political prostitute” during a Channels TV interview in late August.
