Kenyan flags flew at half-mast across Nairobi as thousands gathered at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to pay their respects to Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80 while receiving medical care in southern India on Wednesday.

‎Odinga, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, had contested the presidency five times, most recently in 2022, commanding support, especially in western Kenya, his birthplace.

‎Odinga’s death has resulted in a seven-day national mourning period declared by President William Ruto. The experience at the airport was somber, with mourners reflecting on Odinga’s decades-long influence as a leader who sought democratic reforms and unity.

‎The opposition leader’s body is set to be taken to parliament for public viewing before a state funeral on Friday. This will be followed by a burial in western Kenya, a region where Odinga enjoys strong grassroots support.

The legacy of Raila Odinga is one of resilience and unwavering commitment to his country’s political evolution.
