Primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have officially suspended their indefinite strike action after successful reconciliation meetings with the FCT Administration.

The FCT Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) directed all teachers across the six area councils to return to their classrooms on Wednesday, October 21. The suspension brings an end to the industrial action which commenced on October 7 over delayed promotions and administrative grievances.

The decision was reached after an emergency State Executive Council (SEC) meeting chaired by the FCT NLC Chairman, Comrade Stephen Knabayi. According to the union, deliberations yielded resolutions designed to restore industrial harmony in the FCT.

The FCT Administration, as part of the agreements, will initiate the promotion of education officers based on declared establishment positions. Additionally, the FCT Civil Service Commission will announce a new date for the 2025 promotion examinations, while the redeployment of officers on the harmonised retirement age has been stepped down pending subsequent directives.

“All workers, particularly FCT teachers, are directed to resume work on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The NLC FCT Council shall constitute a monitoring committee to ensure full implementation of the resolutions within the agreed timelines”, the union.

The organised labour, however, warned that any failure by the FCT Administration to implement the agreed resolutions would result in the resumption of the industrial action without prior notice.
