The Borno State Police Command has officially confirmed that five worshippers were killed and 35 others injured during the suicide bombing at the Gamboru Jumu’at Mosque in Maiduguri. The attack, occurred at approximately 6:15 PM on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, during the Maghrib congregational prayers.
The worshippers stated that a young male assailant, appearing unkempt and suspicious, entered the mosque and detonated the explosives during the first raka’at of the prayer.
The Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit recovered fragments of a suicide vest at the scene, and also urged residents to stay calm as they continue with investigations to detect if any secondary devices are planted nearby.
Victims are currently being treated at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and the Borno State Specialist Hospital. While the official death toll stands at five, some relatives at UMTH reported counting at least seven bodies.
