A lone assailant infiltrated and detonated an explosive device in Gamboru Jumu’at Mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday evening, December 24, during the Maghrib (sunset) congregational prayer.
The blast occurred specifically during the first raka’at of the prayer, a moment of complete focus for worshippers, leading to high casualties.
Dawn Herald gathered that the assailant managed to sneak into the mosque unnoticed despite heightened security protocols usually observed in Maiduguri during the festive season.

Emergency services and security forces arrived shortly after to cordon off the area and evacuate the wounded to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).
While an official figure has not yet been confirmed by the Borno State Police Command, reports from residents and eyewitnesses mentioned high casualty figures, with dozens critically injuried.
