A 47-year-old man, identified as Ezekiel, in Ughelli South, Local Government Area, of Delta State, has been apprehended by the police for killing his 42-year-old first cousin, over the refund of a ₦1,000 burial contribution.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrest on Monday, December 22, emphasizing the need for emotional restraint during civil disagreements.
According to police reports, the suspect became possessed by anger during a post-burial meeting, demanding his ₦1,000 refund despite pleas from other family members to remain calm. Dawn Herald gathered that the victim was reportedly one of the relatives trying to de-escalate the situation. The verbal confrontation then escalated into physical violence, resulting in the death of the 42-year-old man.
The suspect stated that the death was an accident;
It was by mistake. I didn’t know when I hit him. After everything, they always shared it. That’s how we return the money to the owner… I didn’t know when I hit him
The suspect remains in detention while the police complete their case file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
