Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has issued a warning to the political class, declaring that those who use public office for personal enrichment and cronyism will face divine punishment.

In a video shared on his official X handle on Friday, December 19, Obaseki reflected on his eight-year tenure, stating that leadership is a divine appointment for the service of the people.

‎Obaseki stated that power is given by God for a purpose and that politicians who prioritize their inner circle over the electorate have betrayed their spiritual and constitutional mandates.

If you are in politics just to get power, and when you get that power it is only for you, your friends and those close to you, then God will punish you – Godwin Obaseki

‎He criticized the destruction of institutional projects, specifically the health insurance and hospital projects,  warning that reversing the reforms will only hurt ordinary citizens, not the former leaders who initiated them.

‎You are not hurting me. If you remove health insurance or close hospitals… it may be your brother or sister tomorrow who will need treatment from that hospital you refused to open –  Godwin Obaseki

‎Since leaving office on November 12, 2024, Obaseki has maintained a low profile, reportedly spending time abroad on an academic fellowship. However, his legacy has become a battleground in Benin City.

The current APC-led administration recently established an Administrative Panel of Inquiry to investigate an alleged ₦96 billion financial discrepancy during the final years of his term. The Edo State Administrative Panel of Inquiry is required to submit its full forensic report on the 2023–2024 local government finances by late January 2026.
