The Niger State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Abdulazeez Abubakar (23) for allegedly stabbing his friend, Sadiq Sani (20), to death following a dispute over a sachet of water. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, December 17, in the Dutsen-Kura-Hausa area.

According to eyewitnesses, the tension arose during preparations for the Maghrib (sunset) prayer. The dispute started because of a sachet of water, commonly referred to as “pure water”, that was intended for ablution (Wudu), the ritual washing performed before prayer. What began as a verbal exchange quickly turned violent, catching neighbors by surprise.

During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly used a sharp object and stabbed Sani. Despite attempts by residents to rush the 20-year-old for medical help, he succumbed to his injuries before treatment could be administered.

Operatives from the GRA Division of the Niger State Police Command successfully apprehended the suspect at the scene before the situation could lead to mob action.

Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun stated that the suspect is currently in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for a more thorough investigation and prosecution.
