At least 20 farmers, including four pregnant women and children, have been abducted by bandits in Niger State.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, in Unguwan-Kawo, Shiroro Local Government Area, while the victims were harvesting rice.

Residents reported that the attack took place on a farm located just 500 meters away from a military camp in Erena town. The proximity of the attack to the military camp in Erena town shows the impunity with which these armed gangs now operate

Shiroro Local Government Area is known to be highly vulnerable to attacks by armed bandits, who frequently operate across state lines.

This attack occurs just six days after the kidnapping of over 300 students, pupils, and staff from St. Mary Secondary and Primary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, an incident that prompted President Tinubu to declare a national security emergency.

The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, acknowledged the incident but stated the  need to further verify the report in order to launch an effective rescue operation.
