Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade have successfully rescued a kidnap victim and killed an armed bandit during a targeted ambush operation in the Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of Monday, targeted a group of criminals attempting to cross the Oshokoshoko-Obajana area, a known transit route for armed groups.
To counter this, the military has deployed hybrid forces, a combination of regular soldiers and local vigilantes to improve intelligence and to help eliminate insecurity across the state.
The troops from the Kabba Patrol Base, acting on credible information, laid an ambush for the bandits. When the terrorists unknowingly walked into the trap, the Nigerian army strategically opened fire.
A kidnap victim was safely recovered during the operation. The individual was found in a weak and distressed state and was immediately evacuated to a medical facility for treatment.
Lieutenant Hassan Abdullahi, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 12 Brigade, detailed the engagement;
The bandits opened fire but were met with superior firepower from the troops, forcing them to withdraw in disorder… The victim, who was found weak and distressed, was immediately evacuated to a medical facility for further attention
One armed bandit was neutralized and several others fled with gunshot wounds after engaging in a gun battle with the soldiers.
The troops recovered an AK-47 rifle from the scene, disrupting the armed group’s firepower.
The Nigerian Army stated that operations are currently underway to track the fleeing members of the gang. The military has urged residents to maintain trust in security agencies and continue providing timely information.
