Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on President Bola Tinubu to cut diplomatic ties with the United States, if U.S. President Donald Trump does not withdraw his recent threat of military action against Nigeria.

Sheikh Gumi, in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Sunday,  condemned Trump’s threat as a serious insult to Nigeria’s sovereignty, demanding an immediate response from the government.

The cleric argued that for a foreign leader to threaten Nigeria with a military attack shows total disrespect to the nation’s authority.

‎President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime…there are lots of other options for our economic expansion and military alliance – Gumi.

Sheikh Gumi advised the government to quickly summon the U.S. ambassador and demand a retraction of the threat. He warned that if the threat is not withdrawn, Nigeria should sever all diplomatic relationships with the current U.S. administration, and explore alternative economic and military partnerships outside the United States
