Surgeons in Hapur, India, successfully removed 50 metallic objects, including spoons and toothbrushes, from a man’s stomach after he was rushed to hospital with severe abdominal pain.

The patient, originally from Bulandshahr, had been admitted to a de-addiction centre in Ghaziabad a month prior. He was taken to the hospital after complaining of intense stomach pain. An ultrasound revealed numerous metallic objects inside his stomach, prompting an urgent operation led by Dr. Shyam Kumar

We found 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens carefully lodged inside his stomach…the surgery was complex because we had to remove each item carefully to avoid damaging vital organs – Dr Kumar

The patient disclosed that feelings of mistreatment and lack of food at the rehabilitation centre had left him frustrated and desperate.

In a moment of agitation and helplessness, I started swallowing metal objects to harm myself

Similar incidents were reported in 2022 and earlier, where patients consumed sharp or unusual objects linked to psychological distress.

The man has been discharged and is now recovering steadily. Medical professionals stress the importance of combining mental health support with physical treatment in similar cases.
