Armed attackers in the early hours of Friday, targeted the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Damaturu, Yobe State, seriously injuring a police officer assigned to protect the premises.
Dawn Herald gathered that around 2:00 am on September 19, 2025, during a confrontation between the unidentified assailants and the police, a police officer on duty was shot in the leg, prompting immediate medical intervention. The victim was swiftly taken to the emergency ward of Damaturu Police Hospital, where he is currently under treatment.
This assault not only threatens the physical security of media workers but also sends threats aimed at intimidating the press community in the State.
Rajab Ismail Mohammed, chairman of the Yobe chapter of the NUJ, stressed that the attack goes beyond harming a security guard, according to him, it is an attempt to silence reporters and hinder free press activities in Yobe State.
Authorities in the state have been urged to conduct a thorough probe into the event and bring the perpetrators to account as quick as possible. The NUJ on the other hand vows to continue advocating for the protection of journalists amid rising threats.
