The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in northern Nigeria due to escalating insecurity, condemning the killing of over 20 soldiers in Niger State on June 28, 2025.
In a statement by NEF spokesperson Prof. Abubakar Jiddere, the group described the ambush in Bangi, Mariga Local Government Area, as a “declaration of war” against Nigeria, highlighting a total collapse of security in the region.
Jiddere noted that northern Nigeria faces an “unrelenting campaign of terror,” with communities in Benue, Plateau, Kwara, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Niger devastated by mass murder and destruction, while attackers remain unpunished.
The NEF criticized the federal government’s failure to protect citizens, dismissing “hollow condolences” and demanding immediate, decisive military and intelligence operations to eliminate terrorist groups across the North.
The Forum warned that continued inaction could provoke open resistance, stating, “The patience of our people has run out,” and stressed that the government’s legitimacy hinges on addressing this crisis effectively.
