Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have emerged champions of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after securing a 2-1 victory over Japan in the final on Saturday.
The final clash, played at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, saw the Nigerian side establish early dominance and superiority on the pitch. Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute, and Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead shortly after the break in the 47th minute.
Japan reduced the deficit through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute, but the Flamingos maintained their defensive lines to secure the victory.
With this triumph, Nigeria becomes the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. The team also set a new record as the first side in the history of the competition to win the title after losing their opening match, having suffered a 2-1 defeat to Poland in the group stage.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) commended the resilience and fighting spirit of the team in a statement issued immediately after the match:
“This remarkable achievement marks a defining moment for Nigerian and African women’s football,” the Commission stated.
The victory follows massive support and encouragement from President Bola Tinubu who urged the players to approach the final with determination, expressing confidence in their ability to deliver the world title to Nigerians.
Similarly, ahead of the encounter, the NSC Director-General, Bukola Olopade, charged the team to remain focused on the assignment;
“Keep your eyes on the prize. You are on the verge of writing your names in history as the first African team to win a women’s World Cup at any level. We are all behind you,” Olopade had said.
The Flamingos’ Head Coach, Akeem Busari, who guided the girls to five consecutive victories after their initial setback, had repeatedly stressed the need for total concentration to finish the job.
The Flamingos navigated a tough route to the final, defeating Puerto Rico, defending champions North Korea, Mexico, and Venezuela, alongside a commanding 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals.
The champions are now set to return home, having successfully turned early adversity into glory.
