The Department of State Services (DSS) has ordered an investigation into allegations by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that the agency is recruiting protesters to cause disturbances and force a curfew in Sokoto State.
The Director-General of the Service issued the directive in deference to Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), despite maintaining that the claims contradict standard operations.
In a statement on Tuesday, the DSS disclosed its recent interventions across party lines, revealing that its officers evacuated the ADC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Mannir Daniya, to safety during an attack on October 31, 2026.
The secret police confirmed that two of its personnel were assaulted during the rescue operation and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
The DSS acknowledged that Daniya personally contacted the Sokoto Command’s State Director to appreciate the agency for its quick intervention while requesting for additional security reinforcements.
The DSS, while defending its non-partisan mandate, also made reference to the arrest of one Monday Udeme Steven in Rivers State on March 2, 2026, for threatening the New Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi. According to the agency, Steven was prosecuted before a Federal High Court in Rivers State and sentenced to two years in prison.
The DSS warned political actors against making statements that could undermine the efforts of security personnel providing protection nationwide. The Service added that such unverified claims could demoralise operatives risking their lives in the line of duty.
Addressing a separate incident, the Service referenced similar allegations made by the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, regarding an attack in Ekiti State. The DSS commended the Nigeria Police Force for their investigation which attributed the incident to an altercation and led to the arrest of 11 suspects.
The agency stated that it remains fully committed to accountability and the protection of all citizens under the present Director-General.
