Operatives of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kano State have foiled an attempt to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kurmawa.

The suspect was apprehended on Sunday while trying to smuggle the illicit substance into the facility.

The 40-year-old man, a resident of Janguza Quarters in Kano, attempted to throw the suspected narcotics into the custodial centre at about noon. He was intercepted by officers of the Armed Squad Unit acting under the supervision of Commander Usman Sale.

The 40-year-old suspect has been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation.

In a statement by the Kano State Controller of Corrections, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, issued on Monday, through its Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, confirmed the arrest commending officers for their efforts in combating drug smuggling into the facility.

“The Controller of Corrections of the Kano State Command, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the officers for their vigilance, professionalism and commitment to maintaining security in custodial facilities”.

The Controller also warned members of the public to desist from breaching the security of correctional facilities.
