Nigeria’s Flamingos have continued their impressive run at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, defeating Venezuela 1-0 in their quarter-final encounter on Sunday.
Azeezat Oduntan scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to guarantee victory for the Nigerian side. The match ended after eight minutes of added time, with the Flamingos protecting their narrow lead to book a place in the semi-finals.
The Nigerian squad pushed relentlessly for a breakthrough throughout the regulation time. Kanyinsola Yusuf, Mary Dunstan, Tosin Rafiu, and Oluebube Umejiaku all registered attempts to find the back of the net before the late penalty was awarded.
Venezuela also created threatening opportunities, particularly in the closing stages of the game. However, the Nigerian defence held firm despite late attacking efforts from Astrid Granadillo and Abril Alejo.
Sunday’s victory extends Nigeria’s remarkable recovery after a 2-1 opening defeat to Poland. The team subsequently dispatched Puerto Rico 2-0, defending champions North Korea 3-1, and Mexico 2-1 to reach the quarter-final stage.
The Flamingos will face Brazil who booked their place after a 2-1 comeback victory over China in their quarter finals game.
