The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced the deployment of Artificial Intelligence and digital intelligence tools to tackle fake news and online scams threatening its institutional reputation.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, confirmed the development during the 2026 Nigerian Council of the Institute of Public Relations Roundtable in Abuja.

A statement detailing the move was issued on Sunday by the service’s spokesperson, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada.

In the statement, Adeniyi explained that the new digital intelligence tools are designed to monitor online information, establish facts, and counter misleading narratives.

He stated that the technology will support joint operations and inter-agency collaboration to identify and apprehend those responsible for spreading false content.

Speaking on the theme “Algorithm Influence and Public Relations,” the Customs boss stressed the need for effective communication to ensure the public understands the operational actions of officers on the field.

According to him, AI has become increasingly significant in the strategic communications and operational duties of the service.

“The role of AI cannot be overemphasised, especially within our operations. Over the years, AI has been deployed in our core operational duties as well as strategic communication,” Adeniyi stated.

He added that AI-assisted risk management currently enables the NCS to assess imported goods, classify them according to risk levels, and determine appropriate operational interventions.

The technology also allows the service to analyse public sentiment and properly gauge how Nigerians perceive its core activities and regulatory enforcement.
