A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle caught fire on the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday, January 6, causing panic and traffic gridlock on the second-longest bridge.
The incident occurred this afternoon near the Adekunle axis of the bridge. The bus was traveling toward Iyana Oworo when the blaze erupted, with thick plumes of smoke across the expressway.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire immediately after being alerted about the blaze. While the vehicle sustained unrepairable damages, there have been no reports of casualties from the fire service.
The Third Mainland Bridge is a critical artery for Lagos, connecting the mainland to the island, and any disruption often leads to traffic delays. In order to prevent traffic delays, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deployed officers to the scene to manage the congestion.
The LASTMA have advised motorists to expect residual delays until the scene is completely cleared.
