Troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force, North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have successfully repelled an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists on a military formation in Kebbi State, forcing the insurgents to flee, leaving behind a cache of arms and operational logistics.
The encounter occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at the Forward Operating Base in Maiyama. Over 100 terrorists on motorcycles, heavily armed with general-purpose machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, attempted to overrun the facility but met the superior firepower of the Nigerian military.
In a separate attack within the same local government area, terrorists encroaching from Kebbe axis of Sokoto State invaded a Hitech construction site at Gubba community. Two soldiers and a Chinese national working on the Federal Government’s Badagry-Ilela Super Highway project paid the supreme sacrifice, while two civilians also sustained injuries.
The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, who confirmed the attack on the military base, urged the public to stay calm that troops have commenced aggressive clearance operations to track down the fleeing suspects.
“The terrorists subsequently withdrew from the area, abandoning weapons, equipment and other logistics in their haste to escape. Following the engagement, the troops conducted exploitation and pursuit operations in the surrounding area, leading to the recovery of 17 motorcycles, a PKT machine gun, an AK-47 rifle, assorted ammunition and a communication device believed to have been used by the terrorists.”
The Spokesperson of the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, stated that tactical teams have been deployed to restore order. He also confirmed that a separate assault by the armed group along the Birnin Malam axis was successfully neutralized by joint security forces.
Meanwhile, construction activities at the affected highway site have been temporarily suspended as security agencies intensify surveillance across the region.
